Originally I made Quake patches with the idea that people who were to play them had already installed other Quake patches, or at least could figure out how to install a Quake patch by following other people's directions (ie, on other web sites, FAQs, friends, etc). I seriously overestimated the intelligence of the lowest common denominator. Thusly, I suffer from a constant barrage of mails of people who can't spell, can't type, can't form complete sentences, and can't understand the concept of capitalization, such as:

hOW CAN i GET TO PLAY QUAKE i WANT TO PLAY IT. PLEASE HELP THANK BYE, FROM MARK

Now, if you can't figure out how to "play Quake", I'm not gonna help. I just don't have the time. Nonetheless, it's my mistake that I didn't include installation instructions in any of the Quake patches that Griphis and I made. All Quake patches install in the same way, so I thought it would be fairly straightforward. Apparently it's not. Below are some simple instructions on how to install Quake 1 patches. I'm sorry if this tiny rant is insulting to some of you. To those few newbies among you who've actually looked around first and made an effort to get information before mailing me, I apologize. To others, damnit, try to be a little more self-sufficient. If you don't understand these instructions, don't mail me for further help. You're going to need a better teacher than I.

In DOS

C:> cd\quake

Where "quake" is the name of the directory you installed quake into. This brings you into the Quake directory.
C:> md newmod
This creates a new subdirectory under your Quake directory of the name "newmod". This name can also be "runes" or "artifact" or whatever you want it to be. It's where the patch will be installed.
C:> cd newmod
This moves you back into the subdirectory you just made.
C:> pkunzip c:\download\modname
All our Quake patches are in ZIP files, which are unzipped with pkunzip. If you don't have it, you'll have to find out how to install it on your own. This command should unzip the file called "modname.zip" into the directory you're in (which should be the mod's new subdirectory under Quake). "download" should be the directory the ZIP file is located on.
C:> cd..
This moves you back one directory, back into the Quake directory.
C:> quake -game newmod
This loads up Quake using the mod located in the "newmod" subdirectory. You can also use "q95.bat" or "winquake" or "glquake" instead of "quake" depending on what flavor of Quake you're trying to load.

In Windows

- Open Windows Explorer.
- Double click on your Quake directory to move into it.
- Choose File -> New -> Folder, and give it a name to use later. Say, for instance "artifact".
- Move into your modem's download directory, and double click on the mod's ZIP file. This should open WinZIP or alternate ZIP decompressor. If you don't have one, you'll have to figure how to install one yourself.
- Extract the contents of the ZIP file into the "New Folder" you made in your Quake directory.
- Open Start -> Run... and run the command line "C:\Quake\WinQuake -game dirname", where "Quake" is the directory Quake is installed in, and "dirname" is the name of the "New Folder" you made previously. You can also say "Quake" or "GLQuake" instead of "WinQuake" to load whichever flavor of Quake you're trying to run.

In Macintosh OS's

I don't know how these work. You're screwed. Figure it out yourself.

Things to note...

- All our patches are distributed in ZIP files. These are compressed files commonly used on the Internet. If you don't know how to handle these, you should probably figure out soon.
- Quake mods come in various forms. Sometimes there's directory structures imbedded inside them, which can cause some confusion when trying to unzip. We don't do this, so don't worry about it if you're installing one of Griphis or my patches.
- Once unzipped, the patch itself is ususally in the form of a PAK0.PAK file and/or a PROGS.DAT file, plus sometimes miscellaneous extra files.
- Quake starts up with the standard "start" map always, but we never replace this in our patches. For patches that use maps (like Slide and QTank), you'll have to load the maps from the console. The console is brought down with the ~ key, or "tilde", and maps are loaded with "map levelname".
- I really don't know anything about setting up internet servers. Please don't ask. Sorry guys.
